Farewell Message from the President of Hillel Lodge

Guided by Values, Strengthened by Community

I am deeply grateful for the support I have received over the past two years and feel confident that I am leaving the roles of Incoming President and President-Elect in very capable hands. My sincere thanks to the Board, CEO Ted Cohen, our Director of Finance, IT & Administration Adina Libin and our office manager Sarah Legendre—whose coordination has been invaluable—and to the entire Lodge and LTC Foundation staff. Together, you have strengthened Hillel Lodge as a well-loved, respected, and high-functioning long-term care home. By placing our values at the heart of our strategy, we ensure that residents are known and cherished, staff feel supported, and families and donors see their impact reflected every day.

Our Mission is to provide compassionate long-term care that empowers each resident to live a full and engaged life in a welcoming Jewish environment. Our Vision is to be a leader in person-centered long-term care. These principles guide every step we take.

Our 2024–25 Environmental Scan reaffirmed four core Jewish values that shape our work:

Chemla (Compassion): Hillel Lodge is often described as “haimish,” reflecting not only our programming but the warmth and compassion demonstrated by all staff. This spirit is evident in the dedication of our care and recreation team and I am proud of how we share our story with the broader community through the Lodge Line.

Kavod (Dignity and Respect): A shift toward person-centred care has transformed our culture, beginning with dementia care and expanding throughout the home. Initiatives such as person-centred dementia care and pleasurable dining honour individual stories, support autonomy, and strengthen connection. This value also guides our evolving approach to palliative end-of-life care in a Jewish context, something the Board has been learning more about.

Shleimut (Excellence): We are committed to innovation and continuous improvement. The launch of Hillel Lodge Academy at the end of 2025 is a strong example, advancing nursing practices and elevating care standards through education and transparency.

Yosher (Integrity): Accountability, trust, and open communication define our culture. Our Continuous Quality Improvement program, as just one example, ensures we remain focused on outcomes that matter most to residents and on the steps needed to achieve them.

These values guide us, but Hillel Lodge is more than a care home—it is a vibrant community. We continue to build partnerships within and beyond the Jewish community, strengthen intergenerational connections, and enhance the sense of belonging for residents, families, and supporters. We are also proud to be a leader in aging and long-term care policy, while maintaining strong financial stewardship to support future growth.

Our volunteers are truly the heart of Hillel Lodge. Whether through random visits with coffee or pets, soup-making programs, or simple acts of kindness, you bring joy and light into the home. From Shabbat services to enhancing Jewish holidays and community Games Day or Biking for Bubbies and Zaidies events, your contributions—large and small—are deeply appreciated. While only a few can be formally recognized, all are valued.

Our strength is also sustained by the generosity of our community. The Hillel Lodge LTC Foundation, the Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation along with broader community partners and grant support, enable us to meet the growing needs of residents despite funding challenges. This support is essential to our continued success.

Jewish values are not only our foundation—they are our compass. They shape how we care, lead, and grow, reminding us that long-term care is about more than clinical standards; it is about dignity, community, and meaning.

With respect and optimism for the future of Hillel Lodge, thank you.

A Year of Achievement, Driven by Purpose

As I reflect on 2025, I do so with a strong sense of pride in what we have accomplished together at the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, and a clear view of the work still ahead.

This past year was one of excellence and purpose — defined by our commitment to delivering the highest quality of care and building the systems and culture needed to sustain it for years to come.

Clinical excellence is at the heart of what we do, and 2025 was a year that reflected that commitment at every level. Guided by a commitment to excellence, the nursing department undertook a comprehensive assessment of clinical practices across all programs to ensure our standards reflect the increasingly complex needs of today’s residents. The recruitment of experienced leaders and the integration of best practices with the deep knowledge of our team have resulted in a nursing department that is well positioned for sustained excellence in an evolving health care system. The launch of the Hillel Lodge Academy brought together clinical excellence, workforce development, professionalism, and person-centred care within a single, coherent framework — reflecting how deeply learning and growth are embedded in our daily practice.

This culture of excellence extends across the entire organization. Our quality improvement efforts are bearing fruit, with proactive identification of opportunities and growing internal capacity through quality champions and Lean Six Sigma methods.

The impact of this commitment is felt every day by our residents. Our Food Services team has delivered an elevated dining experience, ensuring that the changing needs and preferences of every resident are honoured at every meal. The insourcing of laundry services has been a particular success, resulting in consistent quality, reliability, and value — an achievement that has been reflected consistently and positively in resident and family surveys throughout the year.

Alongside this operational progress, we have advanced our strategic direction. Working closely with our Board of Directors, we finalized a new Strategic Plan and translated it into a focused operational plan with clear priorities, measurable outcomes, and defined accountability. At the heart of this work are four core values, Compassion, Dignity, Excellence, and Integrity, which guide our decisions and define our expectations.

This commitment to quality was further affirmed through our successful CARF Accreditation. This was not approached as a compliance exercise, but as an opportunity to advance our systems and reinforce our commitment to continuous improvement.

Finally, our work extends beyond the walls of Hillel Lodge. Through active engagement with the long-term care and broader health sector, we continue to contribute to and learn from the broader health system, bringing that insight back to benefit those we serve.

This reflects our continued and unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality care possible. Thank you to our residents, families, staff, board of directors, volunteers, and partners for the role each of you play in making Hillel Lodge the home that it is.

A Community United by Heart

There is a Yiddish word, "bashert", that speaks of something destined, something meant to be. When I look at what our community has built together at the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, I believe that word applies not just to a single moment, but to a shared calling that grows stronger with every passing year.

This past year, we answered that calling with action, and none of it happened by chance.

I want to begin by thanking my fellow Board members, whose wisdom, generosity, and tireless commitment shape every decision we make. They give not only their time but their judgment, their passion, and their personal dedication to ensuring that Hillel Lodge remains a place of excellence and dignity. I am privileged and proud to serve alongside them.

June 2024 marked the opening of our Dream Garden, a beautiful, fully accessible outdoor courtyard featuring barrier-free gazebos, a soothing fountain, and raised garden beds where every resident can participate in the simple, profound pleasure of tending to growing things. For many of our 121 residents, this garden is their backyard. Watching it come to life this year and watching residents gather there with family, breathe the fresh air, and find moments of peace has been one of the most moving experiences of my time with the Foundation. This project is the direct result of donor generosity, and it will touch lives for generations to come.

I also want to celebrate the extraordinary community that surrounds us. To every donor and sponsor who believes in our mission: you are the reason we can dream bigger. To our remarkable volunteers, who give their time and their hearts freely: you make the Lodge feel like home. And to the riders and supporters of Biking for Bubbies & Zaidies, Ottawa's premier fundraiser for long-term care, your pedalling, your pledges, and your community spirit are nothing short of inspiring. Every kilometre you ride is a kilometre ridden for someone's bubbie or zaidie, and that matters deeply.

Because of all of you, we head into the future with confidence, with gratitude, and with great purpose. The best of Hillel Lodge is still ahead of us.

Message from the Executive Director of Hillel Lodge LTC Foundation

From Generation to Generation: A Chain That Holds Strong

There is a phrase I have been turning over in my mind this past year: L’dor v’dor. From generation to generation. It took on new meaning when I watched a group of students spend an afternoon with our residents.

What I watched was not a “program.” It was a conversation, an exchange between generations. Stories flowed in both directions, and laughter and smiles filled the room. Each participant had something to learn and share from the other.

From the very beginning, and still today, Hillel Lodge connects one generation to the next.

I came to this work as someone who deeply respects this community. What I have come to understand is that the people in our care are not merely residents. They are the keepers of stories and the builders of this community.

I believe dignity in aging is not a privilege. It is a right. And closing the gap between what our residents deserve and what the public system alone can provide is exactly why we exist.

This past year, your support made that real in so many ways. From the new therapeutic bathing that restores comfort, to the meal assistance program that ensures no one eats alone and unaided, to Companionship Connections, which does something the healthcare system was never designed to do on its own. It fights loneliness and isolation. And so much more.

None of this happens without you.

That is not a formality. It is the truest thing I can say. Every gift, every ride, every act of generosity is a decision to say that the people who built this community deserve to be held by it in return. You are making that happen, and the difference it makes in the lives of our residents, their families, and the staff who care for them every day is real and lasting.

L’dor v’dor. We are part of something much larger than any single year, and because of you, that chain holds strong. The best of Hillel Lodge is still ahead of us.

The Auxiliary: 60 Years of Enriching Resident Lives

Auxiliary

In 2025, the Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge proudly celebrated its 60th anniversary. The year began with the customary holiday observances, providing flowers for Shabbat dinners and the celebrations were highlighted on June 11th with a residents-only tea that was enthusiastically enjoyed by all who attended. Residents were so delighted by it that they asked if it could become an annual event and the Auxiliary agreed!

Through its two primary fundraising initiatives—the Telethon and the Great Games Event—the Auxiliary contributed funds in 2025 toward refurbishing living rooms, supporting the holidays, haircuts, and personalized gifts for special occasions such as Mother's and Father's Day.

The 2025 Telethon also introduced several administrative improvements, including the adoption of an online donation platform designed specifically for charities. This system has streamlined the Auxiliary's ability to maintain and update its database, allowing for personalized email communications to be sent efficiently to all donors.

In addition, the time-consuming process of preparing individual tax receipts has been eliminated, as receipts are now generated and emailed automatically following each donation. As the platform does not charge fees for credit card processing, the Auxiliary realized savings of more than $2,500.

The 3rd Annual Great Games Event was another outstanding success, surpassing previous records for both attendance and funds raised. Besides the $60 entrance fee, sponsorship of 48 tables at $180 each, the raffle and silent auction combined to bring in additional funds totalling $32K.

Together, these two events generated a remarkable total of $110,000—the highest amount ever raised by the Auxiliary.

The members of the Auxiliary continue to contribute their time and efforts with generosity and care, raising funds that support meaningful enhancements to residents' daily lives. These include the purchase and maintenance of several fish tanks, monthly birthday celebrations, musical entertainment, and prizes for regular bingo games.

The Auxiliary also maintains strong cross-communication with the Lodge to ensure that all parties remain informed and connected by appointing representatives to the Hillel Lodge Board and Foundation meetings.

We are excited to make 2026 our most impactful year yet for Hillel Lodge residents by introducing new initiatives that will foster greater engagement and enhance quality of life for everyone at the Lodge. We look forward to further enriching and improving the lives of our residents as we continue to build on past successes.

Financial Snapshot 2025

2025 Accomplishments

Culture of Person Centred Care

In 2025, we continued to build on our success with person-centred care, recognizing that this is an ongoing journey rather than a finished state. This year, we deepened our focus on gathering and using information about each resident’s preferences, life history, routines, and relationships to create programs that truly meet their interests and needs. This work has been supported through ongoing collaboration between social work, recreation, and care teams, with continued emphasis on engaging residents and families as partners in understanding what truly matters to them. These important steps are helping us build our intentional and responsive approach — to ensure each resident experiences care and services that reflects who they are, supports their dignity, and fosters a genuine sense of belonging.

Elevating Clinical Practice Across the Nursing Department

Guided by a commitment to excellence, the nursing department undertook a comprehensive assessment of clinical practices across all programs to ensure our standards reflect the increasingly complex needs of today’s residents. Through the recruitment of new clinical leaders and the integration of best practices, the team updated its nursing standards and implemented nursing practices across the home that reflect the highest level of care. The result is a nursing department that is well positioned for sustained excellence to meet the needs of an evolving health care system.

Generative Board Engagement: Where Values Meet Strategy

The Board of Directors took meaningful steps this year to deepen its engagement with the complex clinical, ethical, and strategic dimensions of long-term care. The introduction of generative board discussions — including a thoughtful conversation on the palliative approach to care — reflects a shared commitment to values-driven governance and positions the Board as an active strategic partner in the organization's continued growth and mission.

Launching the Hillel Lodge Academy

One of the year's most significant milestones was the conception and launch of the Hillel Lodge Academy — a collaborative initiative that brings together clinical excellence, workforce development, professionalism, and person-centred care under a unified framework. Developed through interdisciplinary teamwork, the Academy reflects the organization's commitment to continuous learning and improvement as enduring values, not periodic events. The Academy establishes a systematic, program-by-program pathway to sustained quality, and sets a strong foundation for the years ahead.

Ongoing Quality Improvement Culture

Hillel Lodge made meaningful progress this year in embedding quality improvement into the rhythm of daily operations. Moving from a responsive model toward proactive risk identification and mitigation, the team expanded the organization's Quality Improvement framework across both clinical and operational areas. Internal quality champions are emerging, Lean Six Sigma capability is growing, and the organization is increasingly well-equipped to anticipate and address opportunities for improvement before they become challenges.

Food Services: A Commitment to Excellence at Every Table

Delivering a consistently excellent dining experience is one of the most meaningful ways we honour residents every day. This year, the Food Services team undertook a review to ensure that the changing needs and preferences of residents are reflected in every meal, every day.

Enhancing Our Environment for Residents, Families, and Staff

A series of operational improvements this year have had a tangible impact on the day-to-day experience of residents, families, and staff. The insourcing of laundry services was executed smoothly by dedicated operational teams, ensuring consistent quality, reliability, and value. The positive impact of these improvements has been reflected consistently in resident and family surveys throughout the year. In addition, Hillel Lodge has begun replacing furniture in residents rooms which has created an improved resident experience.

Successfully Completing CARF Accreditation

Hillel Lodge achieved a significant organizational milestone in 2025 with the three-year accreditation renewal from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Accreditation was attained not as a compliance exercise but as an opportunity to deepen our ongoing commitment to quality, performance measurement, and continuous improvement.

Community Connection and Philanthropic Impact

Hillel Lodge continues to thrive thanks to the unwavering dedication of generations of community volunteers and donors—along with the ongoing support of the Hillel Lodge Long-Term Care Foundation, the Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, and the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation. Each phase of the Lodge’s development reflects a story of the community coming together to provide both volunteer engagement and philanthropic support.

Philanthropic contributions from the Hillel Lodge Long-Term Care Foundation supported vital programs—including religious services, a Feeding Assistance Program, and recreational activities in art, music, and horticulture—that directly enhance the dignity and well-being of residents. In addition, community fundraising through the 17th Annual Biking for Bubbies & Zaidies raised over $225K, helping sustain the Mealtime Assistance and Companionship Connection programs.

The Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge had great success with its Telethon and Great Games Event, achieving a record $110K. These funds supported living space refurbishments, milestone celebrations, and enriching activities.

Of the annual allocation of $230K from the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, a significant portion was dedicated to maintaining a fully kosher menu and towards Jewish living at Hillel Lodge. Generous donations from the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, totaling $215K in 2025, supported general care and essential services for our residents.

Together, these efforts reflect the enduring partnership between Hillel Lodge and the broader community it proudly serves.

Strategic Plan 2026-2031

A Strategy Shaped by Many Voices, Guided by Shared Values

Great plans begin not with answers, but with listening. The development of the new Strategic Plan 2026-2031 for Hillel Lodge began with a simple commitment: to hear from the people who matter most.

Over an extensive period of consultation, we engaged a wide and meaningful range of voices. Residents shared what brings comfort, purpose, and joy to their days. Families described what trust looks like when someone they love calls Hillel Lodge home. Volunteers and community members offered perspectives shaped by deep connection to our mission. Staff at every level brought insight from the heart of daily care. And our Board of Directors provided the governance wisdom and strategic lens that shaped the plan's foundations.

"This strategic plan reflects the heart of our home, the strength of our team, and the commitment of everyone who cares about the future of Hillel Lodge."
— Ted Cohen, CEO, Hillel Lodge

At the centre of everything we heard — and at the centre of our plan — are our four core values. Rooted in Jewish tradition and lived out in every interaction, these values are not aspirational statements alone; they are the standard by which we measure every decision, every day.

Four Goals. One Direction.

Our four goals reflects what makes Hillel Lodge extraordinary and boldly expresses where we are heading next. Rooted in tradition and driven by purpose, these goals invite us to grow together.

GOAL 1: Residents Live Their Best Lives

Every resident deserves to feel known, valued, and empowered. We are elevating the standard of person-centred care by creating daily experiences that honour individual stories, support autonomy, and nurture connection.

GOAL 2: Meet Evolving Needs Through Quality Innovation

We are committed to leading through innovation as we remain at the forefront of long-term care by continuously learning, evolving, and improving.

Hillel Lodge Academy Isotype

GOAL 3: Build a Thriving and Empowered Team

Our people are our strength. We will nurture a culture where every team member feels supported, valued, and proud. Central to this goal is the Hillel Lodge Academy.

GOAL 4: Expand Community Engagement

Hillel Lodge is both a home and part of a community. We will build on our strong connections to create new partnerships and enrich how residents, families, and supporters experience belonging.

Our Promise

This strategic plan is our roadmap forward — carried by purpose, deep gratitude, and an unwavering commitment to honouring those who came before us, serving those with us today, and building a long-term care community that future generations will be proud to call home.

2025/26 Special Dedication Awards

SHALOM PEREL PRESIDENT’S AWARD OF MERIT

The Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit is given annually to recognize an individual who works diligently, often behind the scenes, to benefit the Lodge and its residents. The recipient is someone who makes an outstanding contribution to Hillel Lodge.

This president’s award of merit is named in honour of Shalom Perel, of blessed memory. Mr. Perel was born in Russia and when he was 8 years old, he along with his parents and 3 siblings immigrated to Montreal. In his 20’s he moved to Ottawa and attended the University of Ottawa. Subsequently, he found employment in the federal government as a statistician where he worked until his retirement. He was a quiet unassuming gentleman who enjoyed reading as well as classical music. Mr. Perel moved to Hillel lodge in October 1997. He passed away in July 1998. To show his appreciation for the care and attention he received at the lodge, he endowed the Lodge with almost the entirety of his considerable estate. This magnificent gift was accompanied by Shalom Perel’s desire to make things better for the residents who lived at Hillel Lodge.

Recipient of the 2025/26 Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit: Evelyn Greenberg

Evelyn Greenberg embodies the spirit of the Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit—recognizing an individual who works diligently, to make an outstanding and lasting contribution to Hillel Lodge and its residents.

From the earliest days of Hillel Lodge on Wurtenberg Street in Ottawa, Evelyn has been a constant and deeply valued presence. For approximately forty years, she has given of herself with quiet dedication, enriching the lives of residents through music, celebration, and genuine human connection. Her contribution has never sought recognition; rather, it has been defined by consistency, humility, and an unwavering commitment to making life better for those who call the Lodge home.

Marilyn Adler, who has had the privilege of working alongside Evelyn for over twenty-five years, describes her simply but meaningfully: “She approaches every request with genuine willingness and generosity, and her caring for the residents over the years has been exceptional.” That caring is not incidental—it is a hallmark of who Evelyn is. Whenever called upon, she is always gracious, generous with her time, and deeply committed to our residents. That has never changed.

At the heart of Evelyn’s impact is her extraordinary gift for music and her ability to bring people together through it. Her monthly birthday celebrations have become a cherished tradition where residents are honoured, uplifted, and brought into community. Through song and piano she leads residents in beloved Jewish melodies: Hava Nagila, Oseh Shalom, Hevenu Shalom Aleichem, and Tumbalalaika. Over the years, she has thoughtfully compiled songbooks featuring residents’ favourite selections, encouraging participation and deepening the shared experience. When residents receive congratulatory messages from dignitaries such as the Member of Parliament, the Governor General, or the King, Evelyn brings a personal and heartfelt touch—ensuring each resident feels truly celebrated, while drawing family and friends into the moment.

Her contributions extend well beyond birthday celebrations. Evelyn has served as accompanist for opera singers, visiting musicians, and students from the NAC Zukerman Summer Music Institute performing in the Canada–Israel Cultural Foundation’s Annual Ruth Berger Memorial Concert. She performed at landmark moments in the Lodge’s history, including the celebration of the move to the new building. In every context, she brings the standard of a true professional. She has also played a meaningful role in marking cultural occasions throughout the year—Israel’s national day among them—helping to ensure that Hillel Lodge remains a place of vibrant Jewish life, continuity, and connection.

Much like Shalom Perel himself—whose legacy was defined by humility, generosity, and a desire to make life better for residents—Evelyn’s legacy is one of joy, dignity, culture, and quiet excellence, woven into the very fabric of Hillel Lodge. She is exceptionally deserving of this honour.

“How special it is for me to be the recipient of the Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit for 2025–2026. The previous awardees are a Who’s Who in our Ottawa volunteer community and each of us has Hillel Lodge in our DNA. I am proud to be among them and to honour the memory and generosity of Shalom Perel.” — Evelyn Greenberg, Award Recipient 2025–2026

“I remember Thelma Steinman at Congregation Beth Shalom, making sure a minyan happened with her quiet determination. At Hillel Lodge, I’m grateful to play a small part each week alongside Rabbi Teitlebaum and Issie Scarowsky, who are the ones who truly ensure our services are meaningful. I also want to express my appreciation to the staff, who help bring residents to shul, ensuring the residents have the opportunity to participate. Seeing the residents every Shabbat and Jewish holidays, their presence, their connection to the prayers, is what makes the Lodge such a special place. It’s a privilege to receive an award that carries Thelma Steinman’s name.” – Dr. Ralph Paroli, Award Recipient 2025–2026

THELMA STEINMAN DIRECT SERVICE AWARD

This award is named after Thelma Steinman, of blessed memory, who was held in the highest esteem by our residents, staff and board members for her ability to give of herself and do the utmost to help others. As everyone who knew her can attest, she was a woman who exhibited tremendous warmth, energy, compassion and a marvellous sense of humour. Her ability to relate to people and to make them seem so special was especially evidenced in her interaction with the residents of Hillel Lodge.

The Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award is given in honour of an individual who interacts directly with the residents in order to improve their quality of life -- a person who as a result of his/her direct efforts makes a significant difference.

Recipient of the 2025/26 Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award: Dr. Ralph Paroli

Dr. Ralph Paroli exemplifies the spirit of the Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award—an individual whose direct, personal engagement with residents meaningfully enhances their quality of life through compassion, warmth, and genuine human connection.

At Hillel Lodge, being a Jewish home is not simply a statement of identity—it is a lived experience. Central to that experience is a vibrant synagogue life, where residents are able to connect with their faith, their traditions, and their sense of self. For approximately eleven years, Ralph has been an essential and unwavering presence in making that possible. He attends Shabbat and Yom Tov services faithfully, helping to form the minyan that makes communal prayer meaningful and complete.

Through his presence, Ralph ensures that residents are not only able to attend services, but to participate fully—with dignity and authenticity. Whether gently placing a kippah on a resident’s head, helping them don their tallit, or assisting them in following the Torah reading, he removes the barriers that might otherwise limit participation. He meets each resident where they are, offering support in ways that preserve independence while honouring tradition. The result is not simply attendance, but true belonging.

Ralph takes personal responsibility for ensuring that ritual items are always available—siddurim, kippahs, and tallitot—and plays a key role in the smooth running of every service. He also helped facilitate the acquisition of new siddurim through the Beth Shalom Legacy Fund, a quiet but meaningful contribution felt at every gathering. Beyond the service itself, he extends the same warmth and attentiveness to residents and visitors at Kiddish, ensuring that everyone—whether a long-time resident or a first-time visitor—feels welcomed and included.

In many ways, Ralph's contributions reflect the spirit of the prophet Isaiah, who called on communities to strengthen the weak hands and ensure that all could take part in the life of the people. He embodies this principle each week—lifting others up, removing obstacles, and enabling meaningful engagement in faith and community.

Like Thelma Steinman herself, whose legacy was defined by warmth, compassion, and a remarkable ability to make others feel valued, Ralph's presence is not only supportive—it is transformative. Through his dedication, he ensures that Hillel Lodge remains a place where Jewish life is lived fully, proudly, and with dignity.

The Outstanding Service Award

The Outstanding Service Award is presented periodically to a group for outstanding service to Hillel Lodge. Recipients have included community groups, non-profit and for-profit companies and organizations that have made a significant contribution to Hillel Lodge and its residents.

Recipient of the 2025/26 The Outstanding Service Award: Ottawa Paramedic Service

The Ottawa Paramedic Service is most deserving of the Outstanding Service Award in recognition of its exceptional partnership with Hillel Lodge and its profound impact on the well-being of our residents. This honour also reflects something larger: the remarkable relationship between the City of Ottawa and the Jewish community—a partnership rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and a genuine commitment to the health and dignity of all Ottawans.

Hillel Lodge had the privilege of serving as a pilot site for the Community Paramedicine Program—an innovative model of care championed by the City of Ottawa that has fundamentally enhanced how residents receive timely and appropriate clinical support. That the City selected Hillel Lodge as a pilot site speaks to the depth of this partnership and to the City’s recognition of our home’s place in the broader Ottawa community. Through this program, paramedics have been able to assess and treat residents directly in the home, avoiding unnecessary transfers to hospital emergency departments and ensuring care is delivered in a setting that is familiar, comfortable, and centred on the resident.

The impact of this program has been significant. Countless residents have benefited from receiving responsive, high-quality care without the stress and disruption of hospital transfers. In many cases, this has not only improved clinical outcomes, but has preserved dignity, reduced anxiety, and supported a more person-centred approach to care.

What distinguishes the Ottawa Paramedic Service is not only the innovation of the program, but the people who deliver it. Their teams bring warmth, compassion, and professionalism to every interaction, working in seamless collaboration with Hillel Lodge staff to ensure continuity and excellence in care.

Throughout the pilot, the Ottawa Paramedic Service demonstrated a willingness to adapt, learn, and refine the program alongside our team—building a model that reflects both clinical excellence and a deep understanding of the long-term care environment. Their work stands as a model of what is possible when innovation is paired with compassion and true partnership. Hillel Lodge is deeply grateful to the City of Ottawa for its ongoing commitment to our community—for ensuring that the residents of this home, and the Jewish community they represent, are seen, valued, and cared for.

“Receiving this Outstanding Service Award affirms the strength of our partnership with Hillel Lodge and highlights the critical role our Community Paramedics play in delivering responsive, patient-centered clinical support in the community. It reflects our commitment to providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time, helping residents receive compassionate, appropriate care where they call home.” - Chief Pierre Poirier

Sculptural Award - "Guardians of the Light"

To honour those who give of themselves in service to Hillel Lodge residents, the Lodge commissioned internationally renowned artist Rino — Raul Estudillo Alvarado — to create Guardians of the Light, a sculptural award that gives enduring form to the values at the heart of this community.

The sculpture depicts two hands sheltering a blue flame — a symbol of life, dignity, and the inner light of every resident. The rock-carved texture of the hands speaks to steady, selfless dedication shaped by time and devotion. The open form reflects the spirit of giving freely and without condition. Rooted in the Jewish value of Gemilut Chasadim (loving-kindness), the blue flame evokes the Ner Tamid — the Eternal Light — representing the living essence of each resident: precious, irreplaceable, and worthy of protection.

Artist Rino generously donated the original piece to Hillel Lodge and hand-crafted a limited series of 12 replicas, each signed and numbered. Three replicas will be presented annually over four years to those whose dedication — whether as individuals or as an organization — has made an enduring difference in the lives of our residents. This year, we are proud to present the first three awards to Evelyn Greenberg, Dr. Ralph Paroli, and the Ottawa Paramedic Service.

Raul Estudillo Alvarado — known as Rino — is an international artist originally from Mexico, now based in Canada. He is widely recognized for his monumental wooden sculptures in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, including the 15-metre Goddess AïA and the 8-metre Mayan inspired Xi'Paal Kaab (Bee Child), as well as his two large-scale Calaveritas sculptures presented at Ottawa's Day of the Dead Festival in 2024.
