Private Duty Caregivers

Residents or their families have the option to arrange for private duty caregivers, assuming full responsibility for their actions and conduct while on behalf of the resident at Hillel Lodge. It's important to note that these caregivers are directly employed by families, not by the Lodge, and are considered visitors within our Home.

Private-duty caregivers can play a meaningful role for families — whether it is keeping residents engaged, providing companionship, or offering additional support at the family’s request. While private duty caregivers are not under the Lodge’s direction or control, we appreciate gaining insight from families about their desired involvement. This allows us to ensure consistency in the overall care experience for residents.

Important Tips for Families Hiring a Private-Duty Caregiver:

  • Hire a caregiver through a reputable agency
  • Conduct reference checks
  • Obtain a police check (vulnerable sector check)
  • Receive proof of the caregiver’s private liability insurance
  • Ensure the caregiver receives the annual flu shot and Covid-19 vaccines so they can continue to work through an outbreak

Private duty caregivers must also adhere to all legislation related to long-term care.
